Overview:
Not too many folks know about this pretty little river that flows through southside and joins the James just west of Bremo Bluff. It is rocky and forested with an old mill along it, needs a little bit of rain to get it flowing. I don’t know if it goes up high enough to pull an overnighter, but it is definitely good for a remote day trip to the James.
Recommended Trip:
(daytrip) Put in at Rt 671 and float to the James. This is a full day trip.
Directions to Put In and Take out:
View Slate River in a larger map
Take Rt 671 west from Rt 15 for several miles to the put in. The take out is New Canton/Bremo Bluff on the James, which is on the south side of the river. From Rt 15, take 688 east to 670 east to 687 north.
Section of River to Run:
From 671 to the James you’ll go under two bridges, the first of which is about halfway through the trip. The whitewater is all class 1.
